The Death and Life of Great American Cities was written in 1961 and has proved to be one of the most influential books in city planning. Its author, Jane Jacobs, proposed four conditions that promote life in a city: Mixed-Land Use, Short Blocks, Old Buildings and Sufficiently Dense Concentration of People. However, these conditions have not been empirically tested until recently.
